Custom Designed Hand-Painted Friezes
CJ Hurley Century Arts specializes in custom designed and hand-painted friezes. As a master of the genres of Arts & Crafts and Art Nouveau, CJ creates customized designs that are true to the form of the period chosen, but are unique and one of a kind. It is his specialty to create a unique design based on the architecture of the client’s home, its’ setting, and motifs important to the family.
We work closely with our clients to understand the history and the architecture of their home with the goal of creating beautifully integrated living spaces that honor the homeowners and their personal values. To include a one of a kind Century Arts frieze in the scheme of your restoration is truly an heirloom quality addition that will span generations. A home imbued with details that give it a sense of place, anchor it to its history, and speaks of those who dwelled there make it an important part of family history and of our nation’s legacy.
The process of commissioning a frieze is a personal commitment. It involves a period of collaboration, on-site study, measurement of the space, and studio design and color development time. Once the design is completed, we begin the process of drawing and painting. Most often, this is done directly on the walls while CJ lives in or nearby the home. Depending on the complexity of the design, intricacy of the painting, and size of the room, this may take from two to twelve weeks; an average is approximately four. For some projects, the process calls for painting the design on canvas in the studio rather than on-site. This usually speeds the process and workes better for some clients budget and lifestyle. On a rare occasion, a client convinces us that they would like to do the work themselves but would like a custom CJ Hurley design. In this case, we are willing to discuss the option of designing and creating a one of a kind stencil. And finally, there is the occasion that calls for our custom designs being implemented in wallpaper for a particular client.
