Ginko and Roses

Rose with Tulips

Ginko and Rose is a commission designed to be integrated into the architecture of a client’s new home. The client needed full-length mirrors in the bedrooms of the home and was taken with our concept of combining art and mirror in our Trumeau mirrors (see Tulips and Arches). She loved the pieces we offer in our catalog but knew she needed to commission something special for her custom built home. After studying photographs of the home, surrounding landscape, and the bedrooms, we suggested the concept that you see here. We proposed that the mirrors and art should be built-in and become seamless parts of the architecture. Agreeing that the built-in option was the right way to go, the client supplied us with ample information and photos to gain an understanding of the architectural details of the house as well as short and long term plans for landscaping on the property. CJ designed a full-length mirror and artwork that fed seamlessly into the casings, baseboards, and rail of the homes rich cherry trim.

As to the theme of the artwork, the client knew she would like to incorporate Ginko, but beyond that she left the inspiration to CJ’s creative vision. Knowing that the Ginko theme has been overdone, it was CJ’s challenge to interpret the venerated tree in a new way. Ginko and Rose was born. Ginko is the Japanese spelling of the Chinese Ginko and a Japanesque approach is what CJ used for the design. As though looking through a window, Ginko and Rose frames a vignette of a mighty Ginko branch embraced by a red climbing rose. Demonstrating design principles utilized by landscape designer Gertrude Jekyll, Ginko and Rose illustrates the nurturing side of nature. Climbing roses need something to support them in order to survive, as children need supportive parents to thrive. The ancient ginkgo acts as the great mother offering her open arms to the child rose who spreads appreciatively across her limbs. Showing her thanks for the years of support that the Ginko has provided the rose flowers into fully mature and beautiful blossoms.
